Ever since ChatGPT caused a stir with its very human-sounding answers to everyday questions, the topic of artificial intelligence (AI) has become the focus of public interest. Prototypes such as OpenAI's chatbot currently only hint at the potential that the technology could unfold in the future. For SMEs from NRW, the competence platform KI.NRW is now offering a program for the testing of AI applications in collaboration with the Fraunhofer Institute for Intelligent Analysis and Information Systems IAIS: The AI.Lab.

The idea: Developers can upload individual AI modules to the open source library. Users from companies can in turn put together customized applications from the individual modules – without requiring any coding knowledge at all. The beta version has been available at www.ai-lab.nrw since the end of April. 49 modules were made available at launch. Usage is free of charge. The project is funded by the "AI4EU" initiative launched by the EU Commission and the NRW Ministry of Economics.

"We would like to encourage SMEs in particular to use AI.Lab as an entry point into AI and to experiment with the possibilities offered by our Design Studio," says KI.NRW Managing Director Dr. Christian Temath. Interested parties can regularly learn more about the tool in free webinars.
